SKYE GWILLIM

BRITISH, BORN 1ST FEBRUARY 1992

IN THIS POSITION: SEATED PERSONS

This is a series of responses to the spaces created between the seated body and the object; a catalogue, obsessively collected through anonymous observation of poise, stance and gesture; a study of ways of “sitting and waiting” and of “carrying and concealing”. Skye spent hours looking at how people sit in the metro, on buses, on benches in the park, paying careful attention to how they position their bags on their laps. She then came up with modrock casts and CNC routed plywood legs in the positions she chose to work on for her collection, and worked out the shapes of her bags around them. The result is her own personal take on how a bag can dictate the way you will lay it on your body when you sit.
