The collection revolves around the binary nature of nostalgia and constructed memory. Nostalgia is a mirage of reality that never was and never will be, however we still long for it. Annaliese explores its different modes, both personal and universal, by reflecting on Appadurai’s theory of the ‘Armchair nostalgia’ suggesting that it can be experienced for a past that has never been lost in any culturally specific or referential sense. There is also a reflection on her move to New York from suburban Australia, which made her acutely aware of her tendency to romanticize past situations, objects and places in a homogenized landscape.
OTB Award
Annaliese caught our attention with her selection of materials and her original patterns. Shapes and color combinations really had an impact, as well as the combinations of volumes and juxtapositions.
